I’m using this so often these days and I keep forgetting the url to use, so I thought I’d put it here so I could find it.

Out of habit I still type iisapp at a cmd prompt even though its gone in IIS7. I was going to add a batch file but that’s just grasping

How to get the Windows Service name from the Windows Service Description

Sometimes you need to stop and start a Windows Service from the Cmd line or from a batch file. To do this you need to know the Windows Service’s ‘KeyName’ rather than the display name of the service.

To get the KeyName run this command from the cmd line:

C:\sc.exe GetKeyName DisplayName

Example
C:\sc.exe GetKeyName “Windows Services Timer service”
will return Name = SPTimerV3

You can then use this name in your batch files i.e.

net stop “SPTimerV3”
net start “SPTimerV3”

Good post from Chris at CJG: I’ve come across the same issues but CJG beat me to the blog:

Ok, the two most important things for you to check if something is NOT working in SharePoint 2010

Check IIS Application Pool called "SharePoint Web Services" IS RUNNING, and make sure its not running as "Local System" but something that has some *UMMPHF* to it!
Check Timer Service - this thing seems to shut itself down and doesn't restart! Make sure it is running or NOTHING will happen in your system

That will solve ALOT of your problems!

SharePoint 2010 Beta – allowInsecureTransport Installation Issues

My first attempt at getting the new SharePoint 2010 beta installed and working had mixed results. I built a clean Windows server 2008 R2 Virtual Machine and followed all the installation steps to the letter. SharePoint installed and a lot of stuff worked but I couldn’t get any of the SharePoint service applications working.

Digging into the logs I could see the error invalid attribute "allowInsecureTransport="true" in the web.config for all service applications. Hmmm.

It turns out there is a WCF HotFix you have to install, (at the moment there is no Windows Server 2008 R2 version) for other OS versions – You can download the hotfix from here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=160770

I must admit I’m a bit surprised that Microsoft released the Beta without this either being fixed or documented as a known issue. I’m not sure what the truth of it is but it does give the impression that a standard “next, next, next” type install was not tested before being released.

Windows Live Writer 2009 – Installing on Windows Server 2003

I like windows Live Writer 2009. Its a great little tool for writing blog posts but… by default it won’t install on Windows Server 2003.

Luckily I found at great workaround at NewbTech blog.

A couple of people have asked how to apply filters to the WebPart. By default when you add the webpart to a page in SharePoint it will display an image for ALL documents in ALL Document libraries and Picture libraries in the current SharePoint site (SPWeb). You can apply filters in a number of different ways.

Search Scope
You can change the scope to one of three values.

1) Current_Site. This will display documents in document libraries and picture libraries from the current SharePoint Site (SPWeb)
2) Recursive. This will display documents from the current SharePoint Site AND all sub-sites below the current sharepoint site.
3) Site_Collection. This will display documents from ALL sites and sub-sites in the current site-collection.

List Filter
You can apply a list filter to narrow down the results to only show documents from the document library you specify. You specify a list by entering the list name.

File Type Filter
By default the WebPart will display an image for all files in a document library or image library, by applying a File Type filter which matches the file extension of the files you want to show you can choose which types of files will be displayed.

Examples:
1) DOC
This will only display files with the file extension .doc e.g. word documents.
2) PNG
This will only display files with the file extension .png e.g. image files

Content Type Filter
By default the WebPart will display an image for all SharePoint Content types. By specifying a content type it will only show documents whose content type matches the one you specify.

Examples:
1) Picture
This will only show files whose content type you have specified as Picture
2) Invoice
This will only show files whose content type you have specified as Invoice

I hope this helps a little. the filtering is pretty simple at the moment but by using a combination of the above you should be able to ensure that the WebPart only shows files that you want it to.

If you do SharePoint dev, this little util is going to save you a HUGE amount of time. I love it.

I've just been playing with this and if you choose "Database Model Diagram" then "Database" then "reverse engineer" It does a great job at creating a DB diagram with all the tables, relationships, stored procedures etc. A much better job than enterprise manager.

Point it at the Sharepoint databases and its easy to see at a glance all the relationships etc. It makes it easier to get a handle on what all the tables are for and how they are related to each other.

Frontpage SharePoint reports

I'm always finding new things in frontpage.
Today was the reports that you can get back from a sharepoint site.

1. Open a WSS site in front page
2. Select the web site tab in frontpage if its not already selected
3. Select the reports tab at the bottom.

You can get reports here on lots of things, especially if you enable Usage Analysis in SharePoint. However even without it you can see things like:
- Recently added files to a document library
- Checked out status of files
- etc

Ok, I've recently been amazed by how much information I've managed to pick up via blogs. My thanks to the SharePoint old timers, James, Brad, Patrick, Jan, Bill, Serge, Etc. Etc.

I thought I'd give blogging a whirl to see if I can put something back into the SharePoint community, and also use this as a place to keep track of some of the new info thats appearing all the time.

It's Funny a year or two ago there was no documentatin on SharePoint, recently I feel a little swamped by all the new stuff and new and interesting links etc to try out. I guess I'm just adding to the madness.
